August – Spider Prevention – A Recent Job & Some Homeowner Tips

What I Walked Into

August is usually when I start reminding homeowners around Sylvania Waters and Greater Sydney to pay closer attention to spiders around the home.

Even though a lot of people think spider problems are only something to worry about in the warmer months, I still see plenty of activity during winter and as we start getting closer to spring. Spiders will often sit quietly in sheltered areas like garages, sheds, window frames, eaves, outdoor furniture, fence lines and storage spaces.

I recently visited a home where the owner had started noticing more webs around the outside of the house. At first, they were just brushing them away every few days, but the webs kept coming back.

When I arrived, I inspected the outside of the home, garage, shed, fence lines, outdoor furniture, window frames, eaves and garden edges. It did not take long to see why the spiders were becoming more noticeable.

There were plenty of sheltered spots for them to sit, and a few areas around the home had become perfect hiding places.

The Problem

The main issue was that spiders had found quiet, protected areas around the property where they were being left alone.

A lot of spider activity starts this way. It is not always a sudden infestation. Sometimes it is just the same areas being ignored for a while, and before long, webs start building up around the home.

Around this property, I found webbing spiders under the eaves, around window frames and near the patio. There were also redback spiders in a few dry, sheltered spots near stored outdoor items and around the shed.

That is usually where redbacks like to sit. They prefer quiet areas where they are not disturbed often. Storage spaces, outdoor furniture, pot plants, meter boxes, fence lines, children’s toys and sheds are all common places I check.

The homeowner was mainly worried about the kids and pets using the backyard. That is a fair concern. Most spiders are not out looking to bother people, but when they settle close to living areas, the risk of someone accidentally putting a hand or foot near them becomes higher.

All of those little things can give spiders the shelter they need.

The Process

I completed a careful inspection around the full exterior of the home first.

I checked the eaves, window frames, weep holes, fence lines, patio corners, outdoor furniture, garage edges, shed, meter box area and garden beds close to the house.

With spider jobs, I like to look beyond the obvious webs. The web you see is only part of the story. I want to know where the spiders are hiding, what areas are attracting insects, and what parts of the home are giving them shelter.

Once I had a clear picture of the activity, I treated the key areas where spiders were active and likely to return.

Around the exterior, I focused on the eaves, window frames, entry points, patio areas, garage edges and other sheltered spots. I also treated around the shed and outdoor storage areas where redbacks had been found.

I used products suitable for the job and explained the process to the homeowner before and after treatment. That is something I always try to do. People want the problem handled, but they also want to understand what has been done around their home.

Spider treatment works best when it is matched with a bit of prevention around the home.

The Outcome

After the treatment, the homeowner felt a lot more comfortable using the outdoor areas again.

The heavy webbing around the patio and front entry was cleared, and the treated areas were much less attractive for spiders to settle back into. The redback activity around the shed and stored items was also dealt with, which was the main concern for the family.

The homeowner made a few small changes afterward as well.

They moved stored items away from the walls, cleaned up the old garden materials near the shed and trimmed back the shrubs that were touching the house. They also started checking outdoor toys and furniture before the kids used them, which is a simple habit but a good one.

When I followed up, they said the outside of the home felt cleaner and easier to keep on top of. That is usually the biggest relief with spider jobs. People are not just trying to remove a few webs. They want to feel comfortable walking outside, opening the garage, sitting on the patio or letting the kids play in the yard.

DIY Advice

Here are a few simple things I usually recommend to homeowners during August:

Brush down webs around eaves, windows, patios and outdoor furniture.

Keep sheds, garages and side passages tidy.

Move pots, boxes, toys and garden items away from exterior walls.

Trim back plants and branches touching the home.

Check outdoor furniture, meter boxes and stored items before putting your hands near them.

These small steps help reduce hiding spots and make spider activity easier to notice early

Professional Insight

One thing I always explain to homeowners is that spider control is not just about brushing away webs.

If the same hiding spots, clutter, insects and sheltered areas are still there, spiders can return pretty quickly. That is why professional treatment focuses on the areas where spiders are likely hiding, not just the webs you can see.

This is especially important with redbacks, which often sit in quiet spots like sheds, outdoor furniture, pot plants, meter boxes and stored items.

A proper treatment, along with keeping outdoor areas tidy, usually gives the best long-term result.

Closing Thoughts

This job was a good reminder that spider problems usually do not start as something dramatic.

Most of the time, it is a few webs that keep coming back, a redback found near the shed, or a homeowner suddenly feeling uncomfortable using the backyard.

The good news is that spider activity can usually be managed well when it is dealt with early and the right areas are checked properly.
